Chapter 14: Succeeding in Your Teacher Education Program-and Beyond

My concerns about becoming a teacher is teaching really what I want to do the rest of my life. When applying for colleges I did not know what I want to go to school for at first. I applied to be a special education teacher but I also applied and got into tech schools. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my career all I know was I didn’t want a boring job that you’re sitting still. Another concern is will I be a good teacher and will the students like and respect me. It not enough for me to just be a teacher I want to actually get through to my students and teach them something they will keep with them throughout their schooling and maybe life.

One stage of concern I wrote about was refocusing. This is the focusing of thing of possibilities and what different options there are. The second part of my response is in the collaboration stage. That is when you focus your concerns with the interaction with other like I said in my concern about my relationship with my students.

I hope to add to my resume more experiences. As of now I do not have little to none experience in the teaching field. I hope to put on my resume that I have a degree and have been working in the field of education. I also would like to have more job experience in anything.

In the next five years I hope I get my degree on Special education. In order to do that I first want to pass both praxis tests. Also I would like to become a certified teacher in Massachusetts. Farther down the drove I would like to get a teaching job in Massachusetts.

How do I start thinking like a teacher?

I fell I am starting to think like a teacher because I am always seeing thing in the book and thing discussed in class that I think to myself that would be good to share with my future students. I am starting to think what would be best for my students. I think back to what I think Makes a good teacher and maybe I can do everything that I thought would make a cool teacher but I am going to try and making learning for the students come naturally. I know that I cannot be that nice, fun teacher 100% of the time because there is sometimes when you need to be strict on the students. That is why I think that I am starting to think Like a teacher because I am see both sides to being a teacher the fun loving side but also the controlling side.

Which Theories and historical influences should most impact the schools we'd like to have?

The historical influence that I would like to have on the school is one that made a difference. One person in history that can from nothing or bad situation and came out on top. This would show the students that anything is possible with effort and determination.

How Can diversity in the classroom help me be a better teacher?

I think diversity is all ways a good thing especially in the classroom. When there is not diversity in the classroom everyone is the same and it gets boring. But when there’s diversity there are different customs and maybe different ways that people see certain ideas. This lesson in education I now believe that it is important to be diverse in the classrooms because the real world is diverse.

How Can I be successful at UMF?

To become successful here at UMF you have to be on top of your work. You can’t just sit back and just expect to do well in class. You have to be actively involved in your work. The biggest thing is to show up for class. Classes at UMF aren’t just take note you discuss the subjects. So when you are in class you should be in the discussions and give your input. But Most of all what I like is that you can ask question anytime.

How do I become a Teacher?

In order to become a teacher you first need to get your degree in education. Then depending on the state you need to meet certain criteria. In most states you need to take a test to become certified teacher. In some states like Maine you also need testing done well in school called the praxis test. I learned this through the class activity of find out what you need to become a teacher in the state you think you will teach in.

Chapter 5: The History of Schools in the United States

In the colonial times school was used to teach religion. They taught the morals of the Puritans and Protestant. The schools were mostly Latin grammar school for children that were rich. In the 1800’s schools were opened to everyone not just the rich and they started to focus on morals and patriotism. By the end of the 19^th century high schools started to emerge then in 1910 the first junior high School was born. In colonial schools they focused on reading writing and arithmetic. Also most of the colonial schools were all white children.

            The debates were not what you would think when talking about schools now a day. The debate in colonial time on education was on the purpose of education how it helps individuals. In the 1950’s the debates were by the religious groups about the teaching of sciences. The next debate was race segregation in school and by the mid 1990’s the race barrier was broken.

Chapter 4: School as the Workplace for Students and Teachers

My group when talking about teachers only mentioned was that all teachers are required to have or be working on getting a masters degree. In the chapter it went over the schools faculty structure. Then it talked about the different role each position has. In a school the principal has the higher responsibility and the elements that they are in control of are hiring new teachers. In my groups school the school was controlled by region containing Farmington, Me and its surrounding towns. Our school will get the money they need to give the students a proper education from the tax payers of the greater Farmington region.

Chapter 3: Families and Communities

Teachers cannot promote a religion in their classroom or any school. I think that schools should not teach children religion in school. The main reason is because there is many religions out there it different beliefs. It is not right to focus on one believe and not the others. I think if schools were to try to put religion in to the education to put it as an after school activity and offer all different types of religions. It is hard to teach religion because there is no right or wrong way to view it.

 How are students with disabilities integrating schools?

In Chapter 2 it shows how since 1995 the number of students with disabilities has been growing each year. This is in all types of disability that the number has risen each year. From the U.S. Census Bureau, 2006 says that nearly half of students receiving special help have a learning disability. When a student has a learning disability comprehend at the same level as most students just cannot read of decode what they are reading at the same rate. When the students get accommodations it sets them up to be in the same position as kids without a learning disability. This way the are at the same playing field as everyone else. These make students with disabilities blend in with the regular students and makes getting accommodations to get the same education as everyone one else in the class.

Things that brought me joy


• I like the idea of the teacher working in hands on assignments. This is how I learn better I am a very hands on kind person. I almost went to school for construction but I Like how the teacher used jigsaw puzzles to effectively teach their students.
• The next thing I liked was the fact the teacher put students with disabilities and students without into one class. The teachers’ reasoning was to have the students learn how to accept each other. I think this will have a big effect on both of the students and help both of them learn better.
• What brought me joy also was I agreed with what the book said about most teachers get the most joy out of is seeing a student achieve at a high level.

Things that did not bring me joy
• One thing that didn’t bring me joy was the fact that teachers are identified as semiprofessional compared to some other fields as law and engineering.
• Another thing that did not bring me joy was the fact that three out of four teachers say they are under paid for what they have to do.
• The last thing that was not joyful to me was that one in five entry level teachers are gone within the first three years.
